Oíche Filíochta        le Dairena Ní Chinnéide

B’onóir dúinne uile anseo an file ó Chorca Dhuibhne, Dairena Ní Chinnéide, a chur in aithne do mhuintir WAS agus Bhéal an Dá Chab ar an gcéad oíche d’Aibreáin 2022. B’é an chéad oíche “amach” tar éis na Pandéime dúinne go léir í agus bhaineamar an-taitneamh aisti! It was a great honour to introduce denizens of WAS and Ballydehob to the wonderful poetry of Irish language poet, West Kerry’s Dairena Ní Chinnéide. It was the first night out since the Pandemic for most of us and we really enjoyed it!

Dairena introduced us to her beautiful and thought-provoking work, sensitively read and generously translated for those in the audience whose Irish wasn’t quite up to the occasion. In fact, no knowledge of the language was needed and many who were there expressed a greater appreciation for the beauty and potency of an Ghaeilge afterwards. As usual, music interspersed the poetry, amhráín as Gaeilge by Paul Ó Colmáin, ably accompanied by Tim Abbott and Dubhaltach Ó Colmáin. A special guest was Paul Duffy, who also came down from Corca Dhuibhne to read from his memoir, Into the Island, the story of how an Inner-City Dub ended up living on An Blascaod Mór. The book is funny, moving and always fascinating and Paul’s reading was warmly received. The usual open mic session followed and we were treated to a marvellous array of West Cork talent, both musical and poetic. The readers included Thaddeus Ó Buachalla, Jamie Budd, Polly Barrett, Lothar Luken and several more.
