Between You and Me – Hazel Hutton

Hazel Hutton

12 March – 26 April 2021

Hazel Hutton is a West Cork artist who works in glass and ceramics. After obtaining her masters degree in Crawford College of Art, she studied glass casting in Shanghai University in China. She has exhibited internationally and holds various awards for her work.

I find drawing and sculpting one in the same. When I work with clay I like to start with half formed lump. I carve the surface which usually finds a figurative form. When I draw I find myself sculpting onto the paper. I always start a project with drawing, loosely formed ideas and research come to life in this way.

When I discovered working with glass it brought a dynamic and design element into my work. Casting shapes and services has become a fascination. Glass can literally take any form; I like to show off its extremes and celebrate its qualities as a material. Working with glass has a certain alchemy that never ceases to surprise me. I’m in love with the science of it.

I’m not entirely sure what drives the love of my work, it’s a multitude of things. When I look at it it’s kind of static movement, capturing a moment very much like life drawing. Human and animal form, I love animals, their behaviour and habitats. It’s also pushing a material to its limits, how does that material work and what is it like in its raw state?

The Skyscraper series

This series was made in Shanghai University in 2015 during a student exchange program from Crawford College of Art and design Cork city.

The sheer size and utterly awe-inspiring landscapes coupled with my own heritage is what inspired me to make these pieces. I visualise them towering over the tallest skyscrapers in Shanghai. I see them as sentinel, a protective force intent on reflecting two cultures a world apart. They are a monument to the Buddhist temples and a reminder of the ancient silk Road that once linked Ireland and China and ancient times.
